They're projections in the gyms. Why the fuck would the be projections in the wild (raids)? Who would be making projections of giant wild Pokemon? Where would the tech for that be installed? All of the biggest, and likely oldest, cities on the map are walled off. Why?

Yes they're solid. The raid points are just streams of energy. It's the same in the gyms. You have to collect energy in your bracelet before using the form. That energy is then used by the Pokemon to form a hard energy projection.
