Hypothetically, let's say SS underperforms.

12M lifetime sales.

How do you think Gamefreak would interpret this? Think they would at least go back to having a national dex?

Or would they just bite the bullet and continue embracing greater laziness?

Business as usual really. The games are ads for merch. Now if merch sales take a noticeable hit then shit might happen but as is the games can flop and Masuda will just shrug and laugh.

They would just bring one or two small QoL changes to next gen, like rideable pokemon or toggleable exp.share and work from there, say they've listened to the fans and learned from the backlash and that they will try better in the future.

Eh, probably not. Even if the game literally sells zero copies, a few of GF's higher-ups would kill themselves and the franchise will still continue making the other 95% of their profits from everywhere else, business as usual. The next games Sword 2 and Shield 2 would likely bring back a couple more cut Pokemon, and fix one or two more little issues players had, but that's it.

Literally the only way for TPC to unfuck gen 8+ would be if the games end up being so abhorrently bad that they affect merch sales of other gens.

Gamefreak (and Nintendo) are likely very much aware why people are mad about the game and will know exactly why it underperforms but I doubt it'll do anything impactful since like >>40571165 says, the important thing is the merch and there's no way merch will ever stop bringing in big bucks.

12M is still top 10 selling Switch game. Pokemon is just so big that no matter what they do they can only fail up.

Yes. Boycotting the merch would have a much larger impact than boycotting the games. The most they can milk from the games is $120 assuming you got both games which most people don't. Merch is practically unlimited in how much they can milk you for. There's a reason why they get like 3 times as much money in merch than from the games. You can think the games are absolute ass and still want to get a plush or a shirt so in the end if you get merch they still win.
