Rosa's mom says she sounds like she's filled to the brim with energy in calls, Red's (sarcastically) a "chatty gossip," and Lyra's very compassionate about her Pokemon friends. Masters also seems to line up with these few tidbits, while also showing the casts' NPC variants like Brendan have an identical personality to their protag self.
Their backstories (for example, Brendan moved from Olivine to Littleroot because his dad's a gym leader, Dawn and Barry were best friends ever since they were babies, and their fathers were likewise best of friends going by Palmer's Frontier dialogue) and motives (Lyra wants to have a good time with her Pokemon and understand them more) do exist in-universe, but they don't really get shown much since it's not really important to the game itself so it get relegated to minor dialogues, or they already achieve what they're motivated to do just by playing the games normally.
