Why is it so small? Did they create it all manually? Don't they have a map editor to create maps dynamically?

That is their dynamic map creator, manual environments from GF nowadays are Kalos Route 1

It is. The weather just changes. There is a snowy area that's not part of the Wild Area on the eastern side of the region though.

They should have made several, smaller wild areas with different biomes (field, forest, cave, snow) instead of just one with changing weather effects. Cramming all this shit into one area just feels unnatural, and it's apparently sectioned off anyway so I'm not sure what the point of having it all one area was.
