Literally all there is to it is that the 2D games (RBY - B2W2) take place in a separate universe than the 3D games (XY - SWSH). Apart from that they're laid out in a fairly logical and canonical order.

The timeline was fine. The point of the ORAS epilogue was to say "all versions of the game are canon in different universes". So ORAS still happens atvthe same time as Kanto, it's just a Kanto with a fairy type that we don't see. People need to stop talking about the timeline with game names and use the events becase it's the lore historyy that stays the same. Red's adventure = Brendan/May's -> Ethan/Lyra's = Dawn/Lucas' -> Hilda/Hilbert's -> Rosa/Nate's = Serena/Calem's -> Elio/Selene's

FRLG and Emerald were at the time same time

HGSS and Platinum were at the same time

BW happened

The scenario writer of the series stated that BW2 and XY happened at the same time way back when on his twitter before removing it.

The original Kanto and Johto were their own timeline not really connected to anything.

As soon as ORAS came in, confirming alternate universes that all just kind of got thrown out the window, and yeah from there things stopped making sense. This timeline was never really that deep to begin with, so its amazing they fucked it up anyway.

The Pokémon timeline has always made sense, and it’s because the devs repeatedly throw in small details to connect the games together and that timespan. Even when XY and ORAS came around it still made sense, it was just “oh Pokemon has two universes now” and that’s perfectly fine.

The only thing that was ever confusing about the Pokémon timeline was the span of time between DPPt/HGSS and BW because it is never stated and literally the only thing anyone can work off of is the Rocket Grunt and his kid. Aside from that, the timeline is as simple as you could get especially for a series this large.

It doesn't matter unless you wanna make a comic, then choose if keeping megas or not. It's about the order of events. ORAS and XY don't exists in a vacuum, in their universe there was also a Red, a Lucas, a N, etc and their stories were the same except they had megas.

Basically GF doesn't like making things canon so they said "all versions are" so if you played Sapphire and feel that is your story then that is canon in a verse while John's Emerald is canon in another. BW touched on this already, but this also allows GF to pull changes in the lore out of their ass which I think is the main reason they did it (because see FRLG and HGSS never contradict the old games, only expanded on them, and XY was fine because you could say megas are a Kalos thing, ORAS brought the trouble).

I've always felt since day one that ORAS shouldn't have been remakes, they should have been direct sequels to Emerald with all the new content added from XY + allow them to change the region up, and they totally could have put RSE on virtual console like they did gen 1 and 2, since the 3DS could run GBA games, but they didn't really make use of it at all.

Hoenn takes place the same time as RGBY and FRLG you retard. It’s not that hard to understand. They even specifically neglect to mention literally any other evil team besides Team Rocket because at that point TR were the only evil team that were at large.

And before anyone goes “b-but Megas are newly discovered in Kalos” completely forget that Megas weren’t a big thing in ORAS Hoenn either. In fact the only ones with a lick of understanding of it were Steven, Zinnia, and the evil teams because they all were lorefags. atlus is hit or miss in that department. just look at persona, they had some awesome worldbuilding going in 1 and 2, then threw most of it away with a half-assed soft reboot in 3, and now 1 and 2 are only acknowledged with minor references and hackshino ripping off their plot points.
the best counterexample is actually falcom. with kiseki, they've maintained a continuous timeline and worldbuilding since 2004. with ys, they've been doing it even longer.

ORAS made the two timeline theory, i.e. originals and remakes canon. And then SM/USUM came up with a multiverse that still is pretty tame. They do more to solidify a consistent timeline with all these games than what Masuda is saying. That’s literally why the story details of Red and Blue’s journey taking place before the player’s in LG, how Archer became the new Rocket Leader, and why Jessie, James, and Meowth aren’t around in the later titles, are there in the first place.

You people are trying to make sense on a series that just adds new pokémon and make it seems like they weren't discovered before when they where just hanging out in the next region. Eggs were also a new discovery in GS. Masuda is just saying that the plot just moves on with what it needs, but it was always like that, it doesn't mean that the event of the previous game doesn't affect the next one or that the games are inconsequential.

I don't get the confusion on gen 5 to 6 to 7, Dexio and Sinna clearly lived through XY events and Colress is still fucking around, FUCKING LOOKER. My main guess is that they are avoiding to mention exact elapsed years now so they don't have to worry about aging and characters changing to much. So yeah, we're living in a Simpsons timeline now, get used to it.

The timeline is utterly inconsequential anyway since most of the games aren't direct sequels or prequels. They could realistically take place in any order and it wouldn't really matter, they're just separate stories tied together by recurring characters. The only games where the timeline is remotely important are RBY -> GSC and BW -> B2W2. Who cares about anything else? It's not like the series is telling one large overarching story.

Self-contained stories just aren't as engaging when it comes to long-running franchises with somewhat coherent world-building. This is why G/S/C/HG/SS and B2/W2, both clearly sequels and continuing the story of their predecessors, were able to build on strong foundations and extend the story and lore for the better. Just imagine if they weren't sequels, but happened in a "parallel universe" where the previous games didn't exist.

ORAS and USUM are different timelines (Didn't Looker in ORAS have amnesia).
