Oh my bad, I usually have it off. I remember having it on in Gen 6 and thought that my mons that I never sent out got way too much EXP, so my expectations for SWSH EXP Share were even worse. At least this is a little bit better than what I had in mind.

Wait nevermind, this is just gen 5/7's EXP formula at work, and the guy on Twitter was being an idiot.
The EXP is based on the level of your Pokemon vs the one you just defeated, and not participating in battle halves the base EXP.
There's three level 12 Pokemon here, with the base being 70, but since Sobble didn't battle he gets half that.
Higher leveled Pokemon get less, and half of that if they didn't battle.
It works the same way as gen 7, while the guy on Twitter makes it sound like it's a new and more gradual system.

There's no way for us to know. The exp share itself doesn't matter what matters is how high your level will be compared to the trainers you have which we don't know until the game is out.

The higher level a Pokémon is compared to the fainted Pokémon, the less experience they get and vice versa. Pokémon who haven't appeared in battle also only get half the experience.

That tweet sounds like a genwunner's description of experience gain. Like they're describing some mysterious (to them) thing they just discovered on the internet.

The exp share is only an issue in gen 6. It's balanced in gen 7. Most retards on this board only think otherwise because they didn't even bother playing gen 7 with it on.

the only games in the series that arent balanced for EXP share are XY and ORAS. those two are piss easy with it on, and xy's level curve is actually too steep with it off. sun and moon made the EXP formula more like gen v, so the games were kinda balanced around having it on. still maybe a bit too easy, but i think usum got the exp share level cruve right

I think they're also trying to make the games more like a RPG with party experience. There's not really any other RPG these days that awards absolutely 0 experience to party members that weren't in battle.

In your standard JRPG, everyone gets some experience. Imagine rotating out your Dragon Quest characters because someone was super under-leveled from being left out of battles and getting no EXP. It would suck.

The average JRPG has a small party size usually ranging between 5-10 characters. You can't replace any of those characters with a new one half way through the game. You can't trade those characters for better ones. Sometimes those games can lock you out of backtracking. Those games also usually encourage heavy team based gameplay, having three active characters usually.

Pokemon doesn't need exp share because the whole concept is about replacing your team or adding to it based off the problems you encounter. Finding you need a ghost type? Go find one. Need a water type, start fishing. Feel like your team is underleveled, go into the nearby grass and get an almost fully leveled mon.

Pokemon is a monster catching/training game first and for most above everything else. Exp share ruins the concept by making catching new Pokemon usually worst then just catching something at level one and keeping it in your back pocket.

I’m confused because you’re making the point that “Pokemon is meant to be about actively rotating your party” but the whole purpose of EXP share was to make lower leveled mons catch up.

Why would you want to always catch a weaker pokemon you may or may not use, force it to battle by itself in one-on-one fights rather than try to wait for it to be at a comfortable level and then see how it does? Or if it faints a lot in those one-on-one fights it can stay on the sidelines a bit until it hits a higher level?

Ever train something like a Shedidnja in-game? Exp share is a godsend. It was only bad/broken in gen 6.

It's definitely not as bad in Gen 7 since they brought back Black and White's Exp scaling but it's still not good and leaves you severely overleveled. Making it impossible to turn off will probably help on that front, but I still see no reason to defend an improvement to a bad feature when it replaced a tried-and-true good feature (the old Experience Share)

It was balanced in SM too. The only time you end up overleveled is near the end of the third island and there's a level spike on the fourth island where you end up underleveled again anyway so it doesn't matter.

No, in gen 7 it doesn't weight experience by how much that pokemon did in battle. Pokemon would receive more or less exp due to their relative level to the opponent.

Yes it does. If it participated it gets 100%. If it didn't it gets 50%*scale depending on its level.
