It's kinda hard to tell, i keep seeing claims flip flop between it being either 3rd gen or 5th.

>3DS era

XY: 16.40 million

RS and BW are the least selling mainline games (besides third versions)
Coincidentally enough, a large part of their criticisms involved the Pokedex in some manner
SS will still sell like hotcakes

The main reason was that even normalfags had a nintendo DS with R4, Acekard, etc. Meanwhile the 3DS hacking scene wasn´t that trustworthy at the time.

HGSS was also printed in lower numbers than most Pokemon games due to the Pokewalker. It certainly effected it's sales a bit. That's why HGSS has gone for 200 dollars in the past.
