The decline of Fighting type [Meta Commentary]

No.40590617 View ViewReplyOriginalReport
I remember playing gen 3 how much fun the Focus Punch mindgames were. Fighting is such a great offensive typing, and all of the other options were also scary in their own way so going for Focus Punch could really make sense (Cross Chop has poor distrubution and 80% accuracy, HJK is learned even less and has a catastrophe chance, Superpower has problems with 2HKOs due to lowering attack and also has limited distribution, Brick Break is only 75 power). Heck, sometimes you even saw Reversal run because the base 200 power in best case can just be a huge deal. Then in gen 4 they add Close Combat and basically all of these moves stop being relevant as Close Combat is just a basic good option you kinda always want to run if you can; why deal with meaningful drawbacks when you have a move with a mostly meaningless drawback? I'm always sad to see high power relatively low drawback moves introduced because I feel it limits the game in the long run. For any typing that lacks a base 80+ 100% accurate move without a bad drawback on either physical or special, I hope those aren't added in sword/shield. Keep the diversity and encourage more creativity; the game is better this way.
