Sales absolutely matter and anyone who says otherwise is wrong, but they don't indicate the quality of a game. Plenty of games have sold well despite being shit, see the Sonic and Persona franchises for more details.
Ultimately, Pokemon Sword and Shield will sell millions more than Sun and Moon did, and there's nothing hardcore fans can do about it besides buy Digimon.

As LGPE doesn't even touch normal main line releases. Sun and Moon sold 10 million units the weekend it came out.
