You can have different focal lengths. It's a very common camera setting. Your mind should have jumped straight to that, it's a simple explanation.

It's not just that the focal length is different, the player character is smaller in the shot too. It's taken from a higher angle with a different focal length, thus magnifying what's in the far distance.

It's pretty simple. Game Freak's not great, but this is a pretty typical thing. And it's been literal decades and you're taking maps to be the final representation of the games. They usually aren't,

You're viewing less than half of what's between the bridge and the final city because of the angle. It's still far away.

The same 3D map is being used at both images on the left side, so it's not like it's going to shrink all of a sudden.

Yes they do.
The in-game map (aka the region you will walk across) isn't "to scale" because GF randomly changes the distances and sizes in an incoherent manner.
Sometimes you will feel close to a landmark but it will take minutes to reach it, and sometimes the opposite.

And btw focal length shouldnt be allowed to change like that, all it does is ruining immersion.
This isn't a game about photography, you're a kid on travel and the camera is your eyes. Eyes don't change their focal length every now and then.

They keep on focusing on the map scale but that's not even the point. It's the fact that from further south, the castle looks like it's closer than when you're at the bridge. It's not a scale error or even really an angle error, it's a logic error because GF is too lazy to have it as one map, they probably recreated it as a backdrop for both routes and didn't pay attention to how it would look in comparison to the other. It would be like if the second view showed the castle as purple or something.

Except the bridge isn't a part of the Wild Area. Afaik only the Wild Area is going to be seamless, and the Wild Area's representation of the tower-castle-thing shows it as a large, massive building. The bridge is just going to be a rail/hallway that attempts to emulate a part of the Wild Area and the tower-castle-thing, which would easily explain the laughable textures for the pseudo Wild Area and the inconsistent scaling of the tower-castle-thing.

Well, they're not supposed to do anything. Apparently their fans are satisfied with paying $60 for low effort garbage. Any other company would go out of business because most of the time, consumers stop buying crappy products. Unfortunately, Pokémon 'fans' would probably still pay $60 if GF was selling them an empty box and tell you you're not a 'real fan' if you don't do the same, so GF has no incentive to improve.

This is not a problem when zone is big or feels big. Look at Skyrim - it's a tiny place, but obstacles make it feel bigger. In this case it doesn't even mater, is there transition somewhere under bridges or not: it feels small, because right from the station you can see at least 1/4 of the world.
