I liked the designs and had fun catching and training pokemon, had friends playing it as well.
as a kid I fell for the lucario furbait meme around gen 4 and still think hes really cool.
I started with gen 4 skipped 5 played 6 and 7 but will be skipping 8.

Battles and teambuilding are fun. Trading boils down to "trade version exclusives commons you can get multiples of for the other version's commons". Catching them all is something I consider important even if I usually only bother getting ahold of a certain pokemon if I plan to use it.

Honestly, the Pokemon are the only things I care about. I don't even want to play any of the games.
I do enjoy teambuilding on showdown, but I mean silly gimmicky teams instead of any teams that will actually be usable because GameFreak has no idea how to balance their games.
