Just what are they supposed to be? Jellyfish with a face and hat?
It got similar colours to Galarian Ponyta so I'm going with psychic type. Maybe paychic/ghost.

Hatterene looks based on a sea angel, a hat stand and a witch. I'm guessing water and something (psychic, ghost or fairy).

The pre-evo looks more like a generic jellyfish, it makes me think more water/fairy.

HEre's a really shitty sharpening attempt. The big bubble on top is the jellyfish-like hat, the black markings are under / around (?) its eyes which are looking to the right. The bottom blue blobs are either its hands or pigtails from its "hat"

Hopefully more than Psychic. I like to think they'll go the "mad as a hatter"/mercury poisoning route and make them Psychic/Poison, but I'm pretty sure they'll be Psychic or Psychic/Fairy (again).

That I can see, but Hatterene itself still vexes me. I currently see it as an ape-like face looking right and up, with concerned eyebrows over black eyes looking back, and a nostril-less snout over a pained looking, open-mouth grin. I KNOW it isn't right but its all I can see.

The top of your "mouth" is a closed smile/smirk.

The tuft of hair that comes in on the left? There's a line above that. That's it's mouth. Above that there's a tiny line that looks like it could be jperg artifacting or dust, but that's the nose. Above the eyes it has upturned eyebrows.

It's the ISHYGDDT face, or pic related. Give me a sec though, I'll trace it.

Facial features outlined in yellow.

The weird mouth you're all talking about is just shadow on the top of its "body." It's built exactly the same as Mismagius. Hat, round head, pencil thin neck, and the rest is dress from there down.

Okay, I do buy the polyp thing, but this is how I see it.
Basically it's a little skinny broom shaped thing with a bunch of colorful hair that forms the hat and the volume of it's body. The little bit we can see under the hair is its skinny neck that goes all the way to the non hair part on the bottom.

Honestly, kinda creepy thinking of it without the hair.
