Grimmsnarl is based on an Oni, most obviously. An Oni is one example of Japanese yokai or an ogre/troll- but taking the example of it being a yokai, which are traditionally spirits or demons, they are commonly seen in Japanese fairytales. The fairy type begins to make sense when you look at the story, does it not?

I feel one of the reasons they went with Psychic for Ponyta was because its powers are focused around its horn, which is similar to a psychic third eye as seen on the Cosmog family and Jirachi (plus I'm pretty sure the Psychic symbol in the TCG is meant to represent a third eye). So if you think of the horn as an external third eye, or perhaps as a built-in arcane focus like Kadabra's spoon, it kind of works.

Fairy type is clearly based on the Fae (or Fair Folk as they are sometimes called) from folklore.
If you knew anything about the Fae you would've realize just of silly calling it "Light," type would be. The Fae are Assholes at Best and actual Demons at Worst.
