Probably because he unofficially started handing off writing to his more tumblr-y assistant staff so he could stabilize the massive catastrophe that was the Hiveswap kickstarter and wow does it show.
overall, I recommend reading Problem Sleuth first. It's shorter, and more unanimously acclaimed, while sharing much the same basic format. If you like it, you might like homestuck, read it until you get sick of it. If you don't, save your time.
