Stuff like Garbodor and druddigon would just be conveniently ignored like Jynx and Magmar, and the samefaces could be joked about similarly to how "thing turns into thing with three heads" is joked about from gen 1.
With the same marketing, yeah, Gen 5 could have been a success the same way Gen 1 was.
