most of the designs are fine in a vacuum but they look so fucking inconsistent with older designs

Not really. You could argue gen 3 had a different style compared to gen 1 and 2 but everything after has remained fairly consistent.

And a lot of gen 5 mons still looks like shit. It's far from a kneejerk reaction to something different. They looked shit then, they still do now. Gen 8 still manages to top gen 5, 6 and 7's level of shitters with ease, though.
