What it was afraid of its predators consuming is its core which we see here.
The pollution Im guessing prevents Corsola from forming its rocky coral shell and since it doesn't form properly it becomes a wispy extension instead.
The core is starved of the nutrients it pulls from the water around it via its rocky extensions so "dies" and becomes a ghost type instead to adapt.
It absorbs malice instead of its regular food and evolves into Cursula instead to ensure its survival as a ghost type.
