As of right this moment I see three possibilities.
>Gen 8 does just as wellThey continue on and the franchise is a zombie for eternity continuously changing players rather than gaining them forever leaving them baffled because they seem to think they should be getting more but aren't while changing content instead of keeping and adding content (therefore keeping and adding players, instead of changing them).
>Gen 8 does terribly (for Pokémon at least, though not in general) and Game Freak freak out in of two ways:>freak out option 1: They listen to ALL of the complaints no matter how stupid.Throwing us into a zoomer open world action battle romance & wedding filled trash heap for Gen 9, killing Pokémon into mobiletrash permanently, Game Freak are footnotes in mobiletrash credits from now on because nothing they ever do besides will be cared for as much as Pokémon was.
>freak out option 2: Gen 8 never happened.Like Kadabra and Porygon and black Jynx, Gen 9 picks up where Gen 7 left off thanks to all of the controversy about Gen 8. Nothing from Gen 8, Pokémon included are ever seen again because they're now considered haram.
Games are still terrible but they've listened to some of the more reasonable complaints at least and Masuda, Ohmori, and Turner while not fired, are never in control of anything ever again, basically retiring even though they still sit around twiddling their thumbs 80 hours a week.
All in all I find the second one most likely, and the latter pretty unlikely. Probably the only way to force the latter would be is if the leaks are fake. That would be an emotional nuke and subsequent fallout that I don't think even the shills could survive having defended terrible fake shit just because they felt they had to. Hell, Ishihara might even be out if that happened since TPC announcing more could've prevented it.
