I feel exactly this way about Star Wars. I saw the special edition in theaters in the 90s, enjoyed the original trilogy, played games and read books and then it all went to shit when Disney decreed that whatever they shat out would be canon and proceeded to ruin a great sci-fi franchise... it hurts real bad.

Also 30, this is the first game I'm passing. It all looks so silly and like GF don't care about taking the series serious. Gen 8 feels like such a let's throw anything at the wall mentality. Did you grow up on the series too? When did you leave and why does SnS entice you back? I felt this way since LGPE. Sure the games were declining in quality before then but I always found a reason to still play them. That was the first game where I saw zero reason to play it. I hate how the target demographic for the games went from kids to literal disabled toddlers.

I'm 29 and this is the first game to really excite me with the designs. It's way more experimental than the boring stuff we got in Gens 5-7. 5 felt like a massive rehash of Gen 1 with simpler designs. 6 was OK but very small. 7 was good but had a lot of stinkers and some very forgettable designs. 8 looks to be way more unique and abstract. The colours are neon, the shapes are bonkers, the ideas are interesting. It has a lot of "normal" looking Pokes but it also has some absolutely crazy ideas, like the Fossils. It captured my interest.

I borrowed my big bros red when I was very young and my first real Pokémon game was crystal and silver when I was 8. I didn’t play every game, too poor, skipped early remakes like FRLG and HGSS. Haven’t been super excited since original Ruby. Going 3d was cool but I was not astounded by XY (or bw2? It all kinda blurs together...). ORAS was great nostalgia bait but still was meh. SM started getting a bit fresher but in the end it was forgettable to me. They all seem to blend together to me unlike the memorable 2d ones for some reason.
Not sure what is so appealing to me about the new mon designs, I guess because they seem to look SO different. Eternatus looks insane. But I’ve also never cared much about criticisms other people have about designs (digimon, objectmons, whatevers). I think it just comes down to personal opinion/different strokes

It took me five generations but this is the one where I truly don't think these new Pokemon look like Pokemon. They look like rejects from Yokai Watch or some mobile game. Maybe DQ Monsters or World of Final Fantasy. They all look so slick and clean. Like plastic toys instead of monsters that fight. Maybe I'm cynical, I don't know. I only like a couple of the Pokemon, far less than any other generation.
Fuck GameFreak for all their excuses and corner cutting, though.

I didn't mind it at first. for me each gen were just a tiny dose of nostalgia that came every 3 years, I knew it was low effort and quality shit but nostalgia is a hell of a thing.

So I'm glad gen8 was such a colossal fuck up because it's a great wake up call to move the fuck on and play better games instead

I like them enough to actually give a fuck about triple and rotation battles, unlike GF. They're that incompetent to not have those return to the Switch and have Dynamax work with them? Inverse battles could've been cool too if they fixed up some balance issues.

This is just flat out wrong. The vast majority of the dex was the peak of Pokémon. Although the exceptions to that are among the worst. The only truest bad thing about gen 5 was how linear it was.

I agree completely. Pokémon has always had variations in art style throughout the gens but Pokémon has a core style to it that every gen has in common until now. Gen 8 has rejected this so wholeheartedly it’s almost impossible to consider them Pokémon in my mind

The problem is that the personal journey has become much less personal since Gamefreak is trying to force you to care about the characters and story instead of just the adventure.
I'm playing Ultra Sun for the first time and it feels like I'm Lillie's babysitter and there's an entire entourage of people following me and giving me revives and max potions. Alola's routes are pathetically small and linear so it's like I'm on a guided tour when I should be adventuring.

The fact that SW/SH doesn't seem to fix these problems and cut the dex makes me believe we're never going to have personal journies ever again, instead we're going to have to be passengers in Hop, Marnie and Bede's story because we can't skip cutscenes.

I don't feel excited for the new games for a while. I liked Gen 6, even though I was underwhelmed by it. I didn't like Alola, but at least it had its charms. LGPE just pissed me off and now I don't feel anything for Sword and Shield. The most exciting thing about the direction Pokémon is taking is the anime now. The way things are, I'd prefer if they do not touch gen IV for now, because the feeling I get when I look back at what the franchise was and what it had become gets me choked up to the point of tears... Guess Pokémon is over for me.

I mean the pokemon games are made primarily for kids, gamefreak doesn't care about us, their target demographic are kids so it makes sense as you grow old you think less and less of pokemon. But either way I'm still excited for the games.
