Yeah I love the Vani line, Golurk, and Phantump. I don't think his style should be every pokemon but I like most of what he's done. I wish the Dex was bigger for SWSH but I like most of the new stuff so he did fine

I love his pre-Gen 8 designs but I don't know how I feel about him as art director. His designs' biggest strengths are how standout they are, so it doesn't really work for a full dex. Interested to see which ones are personally his though, probably going to end up feeling much better or worse about him once we do know.

The main fucking problem I have with Turner is the fucking colors he uses, he either uses contrasting colors that hurts my eyes, or boring pastels, its like giving a child a box of crayons.

I have no idea why he gets so much hate, other than being an easily scapegoated western name that people will remember. After all, it's not like we know the exact random Japanese people who made other various shitty designs. All of his confirmed designs, sans for the icecream line, are great. And even that is about the best you could possibly do when told to design an ice cream Pokemon. It's not like he designed every single Pokemon this gen by himself, so I'm holding judgment on that, but I like the majority of the new mons.

The weakest he's done before was the Vanillite line, Guzzlord and Vullaby, and even then they aren't that bad. The rest is great, but these new designs aren't looking good.

I didn't even realize all of what he made until just recently. I genuinely dislike almost everything by him. Lots of cool concepts but they end up just looking ugly or not Pokemon-ish enough.

The dude can barely draw, I'm still wondering how the fuck he got his gig at Game Freak in the first place and even moreso to the position of Art Director. He's a classic case of someone only sticking to a cutesy style and over-saturated colors because it's easier than learning to draw beyond that. It's alright art in its own way (maybe for T-shirt graphics) but it's not the chops needed for even entry-level character design positions at any respectable game/animation studio.

His designs are great but his directorial abilities are evidently lacking. There are a lot of Pokémon this gen that could have benefitted from a few very simple and obvious fixes. I don’t know if he intentionally took this gen in a more cartoony direction or if he’s simply too lenient on the work brought to him, but it’s definitely been harmful to this roster.

he designed my top two all-time favorite pokemon and three of my top ten. i'll always be a fan of his.
i don't blame him for how mediocre this dex turned out to be since it's not like he personally designed every single pokemon. for all we know, the ones he left on the cutting room floor were a million times worse than what we got.

Sorry anon, that art is just barely alright, especially for a character designer. I haven't seen a single instance of James drawing that shows a mastery over volumetric drawing, which is a cornerstone of character design. And for art director one would expect even more skill, especially in color theory, etc. Like I said, dude's an alright artist, but definitely not the calibre of an artist that is an art director (or even character designer) for one of the biggest franchises in the world.

Pokemon designs have always been a team effort, and I'm sure that Nishida, Sugimori, Ibe, Ariga, Unno, Ohmura, and all the usual suspects were involved in this game's Pokemon designs. It's just that Turner being the only name so far that's been explicitly attached to Sword and Shield's designs means that he gets the bulk of the blame for everything people don't like about the designs.
