Pokemon hasn't been great the past few gens, but at the very least I could use any Pokemon I wanted in those gens. If you're excited for SwSh, go ahead and be excited. But it's very clear that people like the franchise for different reasons.

When 4chan first came about around 2005 the old /b/ and /v/ hated the shit out of the Gen 3 games

In old Pokemon forums and Serebii you even had Joe (who was fat back then) claiming boycotting Ruby/Sapphire

The hatred Gamefreak received back then was totally real, since they created a transfer system that was only perfected decades later

Nowadays Gamefreak can choose to ignore all the haters and will only remedy the situation if their sales take a massive hit

I wonder what zoomers will feel like in a decade when the titles they grew up with were filled with fanservice to a region/Gen 20 years before their time. It's like watching Shrek 2 in 2019 with all its dated pop culture references: they start to hurt the movie now.

Nowadays we can take all that it did well, and the fact that the third version fixed so much of it's issues even better still, but overall at release and before hand people where vetral towards the game as in gen3 we had Lucario pandering before it's release and on top of that so many 'humanoid' pokemon tossing people off and making them hate the designs. Thinking back on that as well, many of the reactions today feels the same as back then.
