I remember for my birthday my brother gave me a Pearl Box and when I opened it there was a copy of Diamond inside of it. After a minute of confusion he gave me my Pearl copy and took back the Diamond card. Its ok Pearl was the version I wanted.

Got it in high school, first one I bought with my own money instead of getting it as a gift from my mum. Felt great

In my case that happened with Gen 3 and then Gen 4 helped me through probably the darkest time in my life.

I was not even capable of imagining a day when I'd not want to buy them on release day let alone not at all yet now here we are...
