>Using what was okay in the past to justify what is okay in the futureIf RBY came out today, it'd be crucified now, but it was above average back then. If SMB came out today, it'd be crucified, but it was revolutionary in the day.
For the time, DLC wasn't possible on the DS; and Platinum changed up the Pokemon (while all were available with changing), gave new forms to Pokemon, added a lot more story and post-game. A lot of new activities to do. It did a ton.
HGSS were remakes, using the DP engine to rebuild not one, but two entire regions, while also including all the Pokemon at the time, adding new features and mini-games, a lot more story and in-game events, and giving what felt like the most definitive games they could at the time. Were they perfect? No; especially with how they did little to fix the level curve, especially in Kanto, but you had higher-ups literally telling the staff they were putting too much effort into the game, especially for remakes; so it's amazing the games turned out as good as they could. And the 'New Pokemon' angle is moot, since outside of using Megas as a selling point for ORAS, re-makes have never had new Pokemon.
For fuck sakes, outside of higher-polygon count and following a more traditional Pokemon format, what the fuck are SWSH doing that Coliseum or XD didn't do on fucking GameCube? And that was nearly 2 decades ago and a spin-off game. And SWSH BARELY has more Pokemon than that did!
