I remember getting the Shuckle in Crystal when I was little, and at the time, I didn't know English well enough to understand what was happening, and I put it in my team immediately. I thought it was just a normal gift Pokemon, and went through some time with it until I ended up going back to that house and talking to the owner to show it their Shuckle, because apparently, I was a dumbass, and lost the Shuckle for good because I hadn't had enough time with it for it to have high enough friendship to keep it.
I learned enough English to play the game properly without guessing my way through it some time later and I kept Shuckle in my team through the whole game after I got it.
