Third Games and Remakes were always meant to be breathers between development cycles.

The reason Third Games stopped being made was because they didn't feel the breather between development cycles was worth it.

So now it's the Remakes that are the breathers, which is what Let's Go was, but it's clear that it didn't do well enough to justify those style of remakes rather than traditional ones.

What with Pokemon Masters not pulling the numbers either, and the bad publicity that these games have gotten, the real interesting bit is seeing where they go from here.

Indeed, some generations had Third versions others (Gen VI) didn't, some had remakes others didn't, the distinction between B2W2 and the more Director's Cut style third versions makes it a bit of an oddball in the series, plus Pokemon Fever plays a factor into the sales of the main pairs, like the only thing you can say for certain is that DP did better than BW and XY did better than SM since both of those pairs were on the exact same console.

Even if they were holding out well the reception likely would've gotten worse each time. USUM was criticized (reasonably) for being what SM was suppose to be. So even if Z could've improved XY, it would've likely just been a minor improvement like USUM.

More and more people will be bring up the DLC thing. And it makes sense, these small changes and small new content could very well just be DLC and GF hates that. If they continued with 3rd versions, I think eventually the sales would slow down due to this very reason

Yeah I could definitely see DLC being a justifiable solution especially since it could solve some problems with the series' use of characters and that, suppose you release a few Post-Game DLC, each one adds in a new location that's close to the main region for that game (sort of like Sinjoh Ruins from HGSS but instead of just a single micro-dungeon it's maybe a town or two, a few routes and a couple of dungeons), that way you can relegate stuff like Looker-esque plots or bringing back old characters to that DLC so people who are interested in that sort of stuff can get it while those that aren't can ignore it.

Now that being said there are some things that shouldn't be relegated to DLC like the Battle Frontier and the actual game itself should have some sort of Post-Game perhaps linked to the main plot similar to DPPt's, BW's and XY's post-game plots.

Gen IV and V have an extremely unfair advantage in the spin-off department, while Gen I got a lot of spin-offs most of them sold like shit, Gen II, III, VI and VII all have relatively few spin-offs and VI and VII in particular have some that were just outright free to play in contrast IV and V had most of the main spin-off franchises and still sold quite well on top of that.
