DS and 3DS are not the same system. 3DS family had less units moved than Switch does when X/Y released.

There's about 10 million more Switch in the wild for S/S than 3DS for X/Y. X/Y is basically what pushed the 3DS to the current number.

Though, to be a little more fair to your bit, it didn't help the 3DS sold terribly at first due to the price for the first year or so. There might've been more units sold if not for that.
