The only slightly modern thing about that is the dense tall grass patch. The textures, geometry, trees, and very noticable lack of water reflection all look like a very old game.

The 2D trees concealed by the foreground trees aren't even that bad, it would be an understandable and even optimal corner to cut if there were literally anything demanding for a Switch that was happening in the environment. The lack of water reflection is really hard to ignore though.

The graphics are... fine, serviceable, not all that impressive, but there's quite a few elements that just look dated (like the water). Cities and route will look fine, since they're controlled areas, but the wild area just looks awful and exacerbates all those issues. Besides, graphics are the least of this game's problems.

Just because it looks better than the 3DS games doesn't mean it looks good. Plus, again, the existence of some decent looking areas (this is not one of them) doesn't erase the fact that other areas still look worse than N64 titles. Not to mention overworld Pokemon in the Wild Area only spawning once they're within a short range of you, as opposed to just existing within the area like in any other open world game.

They really don't. The only ones that look ok are ports or Mario. FE has even worse textures, Astral chain has a pallette of black and neon pink to disguise how ugly it is, Zelda is a worse version of wind waker's cell shading, Xenoblade looks like someone smeared Vaseline on the screen

Theres really nothing wrong with the graphics. They look nice. But what makes them bad is the fact that besides HD textures it still looks like somthing that could have been done on the 3DS. No major console game should have flat ass paper trees. It looks like an HD texture pack of an N64 game.
