Why can Pokémon get away with being a jrpg with no real writing? The story and characters are the bare minimum while that's the best part that makes you want to keep playing stuff like Persona or SMT.
Even the culled dex wouldn't be an issue if you had a good fun plot and dialogue to look forward to.
