You're not supposed to see it as a winding path you could go straight through, you're supposedly to imagine it's real and that was the simplest most common way people went through just like in real life (outside huge cities or trains).
You see flat because that's just how the art is done.
The goodness of 2D is that it's meant to evoke such imagination, by the way.
Also, the real criticism for the OP is that they're comparing two entirely different routes. One is almost part of victory road which is kinda supposedly to be puzzle-y, the other is intended to be used for breeding.
They serve two entirely different game functions beyond their basics so comparing them to begin with is asinine and as such I'm pretty sure it was bait.
S/M has more than enough to criticize without being intentionally stupid about it.
