In desperation to keep his talent, they let them make another game and gave him complete creative freedom. Hence dmc5 is brilliant and probably best in the series now. Maybe they'll let him direct a dragons dogma 2. And Power Stone. Do it Capcom.
Pokemon is in a weird position because it's split three ways. Being such a huge money maker, I would be surprised if there wasn't constant tension between the three companies (mostly nintendo and GF, since nintendo owns some stock in creatures) on whether or not there would be a hostile take over. It would explain GF's sudden passion to create their own super popular IP that wasn't pokemon. Especially since more companies are making pokemon games for Nintendo, including Dena and Tencent. But Nintendo owns the trademark and probably majority of the franchise since gf supposedly split its share with creatures Inc way back when, so I doubt gf gets much say here.
Mobile is its own market, because it's so finicky and can easily collapse. Video games on consoles maintain a dedicated fanbase, which equals guaranteed sales, which companies love. Mobile games seem mostly viewed as supplementary profit, i doubt it will take over any main series, like fire emblem, KH and FF have mobile games but still get regular entries.
If there's internal struggles going on, it may be why they'd cut pokemon... To get games out quicker and make more money to keep themselves independent as GF. Just a theory though.
