I'm not buying the game, nor will I pirate it until hackers figure that shit out, but I do believe Game Freak did in fact put a lot of passion and hard work into the project, and maybe they could have done a better job but they're not the most competent developers, so everything is fucked. I'm more blaming TPC for not giving them enough time to deal with this shit, but I'm also not surprised it ended up this way. Even if they had time it would probably end up as bad as DP did.

I don't know how anyone can say yes. Ohmori said they wanted to make the best games yet, and it does not show in any aspect except maybe QOL improvements. The answer can only be yes if they truly did try but didn't have enough time before deadlines. Which is a problem in itself because they should spending more time on this shit or hiring more staff.

Game Freak clearly thought the Wild Area would be a good postgame, and they have implied as much before. It's really amazing to see how little they understand their audience given nobody seems to give a single shit about the Wild Area, unless it's to make fun of the fact it looks like garbage because it's the only area in the game they can't micromanage the camera AND it has a ton of shit in it.

I can believe it. The rest of the map looks tiny and there are only 10 regular routes. What's the point of having a massive area if it's barren and ugly as sin? I'd have taken an actual region over it, but I guess they wanted that "open world" meme for easy sales despite not being nearly competent enough to pull it off well.

It's a real shame because I see what they were going for, and while I think it's overall a mistake I can see why they thought it was a good idea. I'm not totally sure if the DexNav-like elements made it into the rest of the game or if it's a Wild Area exclusive thing, but that's a genuinely decent idea. Hell, overworld encounters could have been a good replacement for swarms or something like that. But they probably would have been better off making a Safari Zone instead of the Wild Area.

Remember in February 2017 Nintendo direct TPC said, and I'm paraphrasing here, "we don't have plans to bring mainline pokemon games to Nintendo switch" they literally pumped this one out as fast as they could once they saw how many switches Nintendo was actually moving. They didn't believe in the switch's sales potential and are now trying to capitalize on it because they love money.

Yes it's clear that the wild area did take a lot of work to implement and is probably why the mons had to be cut. However you can argue whether if it was work it or not

A lot of Japanese devs struggled, if not outright died when first transitioning to HD. GF sidestepped it through gens 7 and 8 (console generations) but they suddenly had to tackle it head on.

Looking at other companies' first foray into HD, they really could've done worse.

Like I understand that opinions as a concept are a thing, but I still struggle to wrap my head around the fact people can honestly answer like this. Are we really looking at the same game? Do they honestly, in their heart of hearts believe what they're saying in this post, or is it what they want to believe? I just don't see how you could see this game as anything but subpar in general for Pokemon, and a massive failure in terms of being the first Pokemon game on console

It's one thing to not care that much either way, or to have relatively low standards, fair enough. But to honestly believe they put their best into this game is something else entirely

Aside from the pokedex being cut nothing about Gen 8 is any less than previous entries barring things like following pokemon and other miscellaneous side features. Graphically the game is lacking but only other games currently on the market, games that had devs that had experience in console development. Relative to gen 7 it's a lot cleaner. As for things they added like nature mints, teachable egg moves, removing the vitamin cap, bringing back the battle factory to an extent is a sign that they gave shit because they really didn't have to do it.

With that said I don't begrudge the people giving the game a hard time because there are still a few things they could bring back that I'd like. Public relations is at an all time low so maybe they'll take complaints more seriously. I don't want them to be dragged through the mud but if that's what it takes who am I to stop those people.

I don't expect much from a Pokemon game. Its a joyful game that I play for a few weeks endlessly and then put it down for a while or explore the world and catch the things i want. I don't play competitively so not having X Pokemon in its meaningless to me.

I do however understand where people are coming from and why this is challenging and upsetting. I certainly think a billion dollar franchise like Pokemon needs to have more care taken into it.

Were you expecting a battle forntier or something (something that takes has never appeared in a first version)?

Also Raid battles are rather fun and they do extent the play time of the game which is the whole point of wanting postgame

No. That has absolutely nothing to do with the game, though. They made a game that appeals to me, so I'm going to buy it. I don't concern myself with how hard they tried. Not only is it really difficult to quantify something as ambiguous as 'passion' or 'effort', but even if you could, passion and effort don't always make a good game. I'm sure there are plenty of great games that were made with the average amount of passion and effort that it takes to produce a video game and plenty of mediocre or worse games that had tons of misplaced passion and effort put into them. The world is too complicated for you to concern yourself with that kind of bullshit. Just do what makes you happy. If Pokemon games don't make you happy then play something else that does.

Yes. I don't buy the "lazy dev" narrative one bit, and the design compromises Sword and Shield have are far more likely to come from direction missteps or external constraints like staffing, budget, time than a lack of passion.

Of course they could have done a better job. Every dev team for every video game ever made could have done a better job, nothing is perfect. I know Sword and Shield are flawed but I think I'm still going to have fun with them. If I thought I wouldn't have fun, I wouldn't buy.

im not overly concerned of the work ethic of game freak, the qualities of the game that make it appealing are all that matter to me, and in this case said qualities are largely the ability to add to an ongoing collection

the other features are okay at least but i wanna wait until the exact depths of the game are measured

They've fucked up their lives so hard that Pokemon is their sole outlet, their connection to their childhood, and just like they fucked up their lives, they refuse to move past it, and will be even more miserable when they finish the game in one sitting and the cut content hits harder than before.
