The dog example for this isn't a very good one, because we have bred dogs to the point that the same species has radically different looks - a Chihuahua looks like an entirely different animal from a Husky, but both are still dogs. (On that note, an Arcanine isn't even just based on a dog)
They have varied inspirations, but some of the things they draw from end up causing backlash... because people think it's strange. Look at Bruxish, for example, that is based on a reef triggerfish - it looks a lot like what it references! But a lot of people dislike its design or don't recognize it.
In the end, making a design innovative is important, regardless of if they're refusing inspiration is what is important. They should stand on their own beside each other.
