Intelleon had the opposite effect for me, at first I thought the diamond on its belly was actually the background of this image and that he was wearing a fin tie, but then I realized it actually just has a fatass belly and it ruined the entire design for me.

That happens sometimes, bud. I didn't like OG Darmanitan, but sometime around XY's release, the design just sort of clicked.

Part of it is we have some moves/stats/abilities/dex entries/size info/etc. to help contextualize certain mons. Opinions do often change when people are presented with more information about a thing. There's some designs some people will never like and that's fine but it's not all that weird that people start to like certain Pokémon after learning more about how they fit into the world and games.
