You're better off just taking your egg with already the moves/natures/IVs you want and take it to.lvl 50 than spending the resources to change the shitmon you caught in route 4 into a good Pokemon.
These changes appear to be good for specific situations. Legendaries, shinies, event only Pokemon, things that you cannot normally breed into a better version of what it already is.
