Now that I am fairly certain I don't want to buy SwSh, what are the alternatives if I want a monster breeder with tons of monsters, online competitive play, charm etc? Temtem is too far away. Are the Yokai games any good?

Yokai Watch 2 is nice. 4 will be released in the west soon. STM and Digimon Cyber Sleuth are also good ones. There are past Digimon games on the DS you could play as well like Dawn/Dusk, although they dont have competitive play.

I tried pokemmo this summer and it's fairly good, but endgame is lacking.
Devs seem to understand better than gf what makes a good pokemon experience, but they are extremely slow.
Also, being a mmo means grinding and breeding is more tedious than the original games, and that annoyed a lot of anons, you are warned.

PokeMMO seems really cool for people into competitive PvP but bad for people like me who plays Pokemon to collect everything like shinies and legendaries so I have no interest.

It's like Dragon Warrior Monsters did meth for 8 years

700+ monsters, breeding different combinations makes new monsters

6v6 battles, there is no bench, 6v6 on the field at all times

One catch multiplayer is against AI using other people's teams, partly due to low player count and the dev not being able to make a real multiplayer mode for some reason

But the AI is good and you can make macros for your mons, I lost more than I won against AI using other people's teams

All 700 plus monsters have a unique ability exclusive to them, meaning team building is extremely varied

Putting that aside this game has probably the most content of any monster game ever released

You just have to accept that Digimon has a very different design philosophy compared to Pokémon.
