While for many it's as simple as Emerald and HGSS being good, I think it goes a lot deeper than that. He seems to have a decent attitude at adding little things, although mostly when it's his idea, if his lines from SM are any indication. Similarly he has seniority compared to almost everyone aside from Tajiri and Sugimori, given that he was brought on to the project fairly early on. He's also the battle director, and while Gen 1 was a clusterfuck it's clear he's fixed his shit. He has a bad habit of introducing weird glitches though, so keep that in mind.
Takeshi Kawachimaru might be most people's second pick, but I have the distinct feeling that Platinum could less be his responsibility and more Game Freak as a whole realizing just how badly they fucked up DP in the first place. I'm going to be honest and say he's probably the person I know the least about, and I'm of the opinion that Platinum is a patch job and about on par with USUM, give or take 3/5ths of a Battle Frontier and a Sonic 2 special stage. If anybody else has a stronger opinion here, I'd love to hear it.
Takao Unno is probably my second candidate. BW are some of the strongest main titles content and stability wise, so instead of just making a third version this overachiever made a sequel instead. Great work ethic, that deserves recognition.
Personally, I have a bit of a soft spot for Iwao. SM was a pretty underwheming title for me, if that wasn't clear. USUM had to work with a bad framework, but I think he did a pretty good job with the bad hand he was given. While not a high bar it is the best 3DS era title, and I have a feeling given a little more time or manpower he'd have added more of the Battle Fronteir than just a version of the Battle Factory. He does seem close to Morimoto, and he's a battle guy too, but I don't see GF giving him another game sadly.
