my teams always consisted of a fire type, a water type, a grass type, an electric type, a flying type. the last slot changed depending on the game. sometimes it'd be psychic, sometimes a tanky rock type. I always thought as a kid that fire/water/grass/electric were essential on any team, and I needed a bird for the Fly HM.

I looked for Pokemon that had types to complement my team but I barely knew how to read stats so Mightyena was my dark attacker in RSE and I kept wondering why it was such a shitmon. Also used TMs.

Pokemon XD forced me to git gud and I loved it

I played red with dictionary on my lap.
I played it for a year. It was 1997.
My team was Charizard, Haunter, Vileplume, Primape, Lapras and Nidoking

I suprisingly learned a lot when I was playing. I remember I cried when I learned TMs are limited.
Got to Mewtwo by just exploring.

forgot to mention that I steamrolled the whole game with him too, with the rest of the slots only existing for HM users. That's until I could throw in zapdos and mewtwo towards the end. They had similarly shallow movesets.

When I was little I ordered my Pokemon based on their HP, the lowest HP mons went out first, the highest last.
I also never switched out my Pokemon, regardless of the advantage.

The only type advantages I cared about as a kid were the water/grass/fire triangle. Generally I'd decide I want to use a certain team member for a trainer battle before seeing their team, throw them in first place and brute force it.

Pokemon Blue taught me how to read and improved my ability to read and comprehend.
I still enjoyed books but Blue helped me.

I would catch any Pokemon I thought looked cute or cool and go through the game with them.
One time I went through all of Yellow with a Pidgeot as my pseudo-starter because I loved it.
I also named my Pikachu Flower for no reason, and now I always name important Pikachus Flower or Hana.
Best Flower was in Mystery Dungeon.

I would walk around and talk to the NPCs repeatedly waiting on them to say something new or just to read because I like reading.

I would go to Lavender Town to look for the ghost again but of course it never showed back up

This was me too. Gotta have that "elemental core" of Fire/Water/Grass/Electric and as you said you always need something to fly. Took me a long time to shake that habit and start building teams in different ways.

I was also adamant about only using high-speed Pokemon, which in Gen 1 at least was the correct choice for gameplay mechanic reasons.

Terribly. In Blue my final team consisted of Charizard, Articuno, and a Nidequeen I forgot about in the Daycare and it gained 50 levels. Didn't actually get "good" at pokemon until RS.

I only use Pokemon that were introduced in the gen that I'm playing even in remakes I'll only use mons that were introduced in that gen. I never trade up, never used bank or pokepark or whatever else.

Now, all I can play is Nuzlocke runs for the thrill of challenge, except i've probably completed 50+ runs altogether and at least a few on every game so I have to randomize them to make them fresh

Because I was 8 years old and had nothing but time, a game boy, pokemon red, and a million batteries to build up my team. Also I did it a lot for Hyper Training competitive mons. Using chansey/blissey SOS battling in USUM while harvesting lucky eggs can get a whole party to level 100 in like an hour.

Did the same for Clefable on my first pokemon red run. Obviously it had Hyper Beam, Thunderbolt, Fire Blast, and one of the ice moves.

Pretty much what ash had, I didn't have yellow so I couldn't use all the starters but I did have a legendary bird on my team. In middle school (gen 2) I still had Pikachu on my team, but I branched out more and picked what I thought looked cool plus the box legendary

I wasn't much for backtracking so after going down to Vermilion City to fight Lt Surge I never really understood that I had to go back up to Cerulean to cut that tree to get to rock tunnel.
Eventually I figured it out (or maybe it was my brother, I don't remember) but I vaguely recall having an overleveled charizard that wouldn't obey my orders at that time.
And if I remember correctly I only had 3 trained pokemon by the end. Charizard, pigeot and a vaporeon. The other half of my team were probably underleveled shitmons.
