I don't like sun moon, but it did have some soul. Alola had an atmosphere to it and the characters and music were generally pretty good.
In comparison SWSH looks bleak, lifeless, and forgettable.

That won't happen. Gen 8's legacy is "the game that cut pokemon" or "most controversial games". People will not remember it fondly and for it's own merit. Only good gen 4 remakes with all or more Pokemon can redeem this generation.
