personally i think it's really cool that gamefreak allowed little kids to design pokemon, it lets them feel like they're part of the game and inspires an interest in game design!

They actually had non-artists help design the mons this gen.

>Pokémon variety ended up being among the worst in the series, with 90% of the dex being cutesy plastic toy shit with very little to appeal to anyone who isn't into that

You know, looking at this picture makes it really clear to me just how much they rely on textures rather than shapes for their new Pokemon. this thing is really just a round cylinder with a few extra simple shapes added onto it. The rest of the features are just painted on.

They're not even good textures. There's no attempt to make rocks look like rock or to make scaled Pokémon like scaly, everything is just flat colours.

Honestly this is my biggest pet peeve about the franchise and was the one thing I wanted out of SwSh. I don't want muh hyper-realistic grafix, I just want Pokemon to look like they have texture. Heatmor's an anteater so it should look furry, right? It'd be cool to see the mechanical parts of its design contrast with its fur, wouldn't it? But no, it just all looks plastic and can lead to confusion about what some parts of the design are actually made up of. Remember how surprised people were at fluffy Jigglypuff despite its huge ass hair loop and dex entries describing its fur making it obvious? It's wild.
