With the item you get in Sword, the worm grows bigger and consumes the apple (Flapplin), while with the item you get in Shield the apple grows bigger instead and becomes a delicious pie (Appletun). Gigantamax converges both evolutions (Flapplin gains a delicious apple and Appletun gains a bigger worm) so the result is always the same.
It's basically Mega-Latias and Mega-Latios but they look 100% identical and have the same stats
