Why were people expecting the design philosophy of the games to change as the hardware improved? This idea that deep down Game Freak wanted to make an open world game the entire time but couldn't because of hardware limitations is totally baseless. I still feel like this entire line of thought comes from people who grew up watching the anime and were waiting for the games to be more like that one day, which was never going to happen in the first place.

Of course not, when did I ever say anything about what anyone else should or shouldn't want? Not every defense of Game Freak involves telling you to consume the product. If you don't like something don't support it and don't play it. But as a developer Game Freak isn't obliged to do things differently or change with the times, as long as the product they put out makes enough money to justify their existence then they should be able to do whatever they want. The overly-loyal fanbase that buys Pokemon games simply because they're Pokemon ensures this will be the case with little to no change necessary, which is definitely unfortunate, but it's not really anyone's fault. That's just how it is. You can't fault people for liking the status quo, and you can't fault Game Freak for not changing a formula that millions of people enjoy.

Dude, your character takes up the whole sidewalk in SM. Your character is one tile when one screen contains like 200 tiles. The worlds are huge in older games compared to now. Literal hallways vs a huge map.
