This makes me sad. I get wanting to use Exp. Share and not wanting to grind. But the spirit of Pokemon used to be training up one monster at a time. Yes, other RPGs do offer party wide exp but most of those systems use party wide battles, not 1v1 or 2v2s. Its asinine they can't just add in a feature to turn it off.

It's retarded, but you can open the box from anywhere you want now and apparently you get the item for it pretty early. It's not like you have to return to a town every time you wanna swap the pokemon at the front of your party. That being said they're still assholes for not even implementing a toggle.

Only 1/3 of the Pokemon are in the game so it really cannot be considered mainline by that metric alone. It's basically another LGPE. I guess the mainline games for the "hardcore fans" they promised last year got delayed or something.

The problem with experience share is that it almost multiplies your experience by 6. If it actually doled out experience equally it wouldn't matter. And this wouldn't even be an issue except they don't balance the game around the experience share, meaning you always end up grossly overleveled.

You do know low level runs are a long standing JRPG tradition, right? Yeah it's made up rules, there's a lot of restrictions players place on themselves regardless of if they're really trying to make the game harder or not. Furthermore, let's talk about advantages. Repel keeps away wild Pokemon that are a lower level than your lead Pokemon, saving you time and making you avoid low levels shitmons. So the question now becomes, why isn't Repel always on? Before you say so you can catch or battle Pokemon, why would you want to catch or battle low level Pokemon? Just go find higher leveled ones. After all, Exp Share does the exact same thing, makes your Pokemon higher leveled.

They didn't balance the game around Exp Share, they just brought back Exp scaling since it was absent in Gen 6. Honestly Exp scaling is so much better than Exp Share for making a balanced difficulty, it speeds up low level grinding and slows down overleveling. It's a real shame it's a huge pain for leveling postgame, especially in Gen 7, that's what they really need to let you turn off.

In many JRPGs, mostly older ones, it's shared between party members in battle. In newer ones, more often it is shared between members who aren't even active. So the real question then becomes, why doesn't Exp share work on Pokemon in the box?

I played USUM and the only part of the game that was much harder than SM was Ultra Necrozma, and that was more due to a huge level spike and a huge stat spike than any actual balancing. Even the legendary using Rainbow Rocket guys weren't that threatening oddly enough. I feel like Ultra Necrozma was almost a mistake balancing wise, as Iwao was a battle guy and probably thought people could handle it instead of toning it down like Masuda or just shrugging like Ohmori. Not to say I didn't enjoy it (I did not enjoy leaving both of my Dark types behind though) but it's not an indicator of quality.

In Chrono Trigger non-active members get some EXP, but from what I recall Final Fantasy 6 didn't. Hell, there's probably more modern games that don't do it. Not to mention how fainting effects things. It really depends on the game, honestly. How does Dragon Quest 3 and 4 handle it, if you know? If sharing Exp with non-active members is something they do, then it's not about what's modern or not, it's just a matter of what the developers feel like.

It's funny because games have started getting easier, even more so, apologists argued that the exp share was optinal. Now they argue that they shouldn't add too many arbitrary toogle to begin with. I can even agree with your second point, but, again, it should be the other way around what they did: exp share perma-off, not perma-on.

when I played xy and oras with a less-than-six team (collecting things I liked as I found them) and EXP all off, the challenge was reasonable and I never had to grind anything, and it was enjoyable despite the games overall being a bit lackluster
