The one complaint about these games I see people complaining about but never giving an answer on how it should be done or implement is the complaint about the games being too linear.

What would you guys do to remedy this supposed problem

after 4th gen regions started feeling like a giant circle.

all they'd have to do is go back to their older design philosophies because right now everything just feels like a straight line.

This is a pretty good pic demonstrating the issue.

Granted it's also important to note that routes also play a part rather than just the regions structure. There needs to be branching paths and open spaces.

Sevii islands were optional, if I remember correctlyHonestly I just want more Sevii islands/Sevii-island-like content. So probably something like that. I really enjoy any kind of "optional" aspect of the games, like the fighting dojo or Shoal Cave.

Not that anon, but you would need to develop a way for the levels to change based on how many badges the trainer had. I'm sure in this day and age such a mechanic could be implemented.

Make areas larger, with optional areas, things to find off the beaten path, reasons to go back to previous areas, etc.
