I wish James Turner was never hired at Genius Sonority, I wish he had never designed for Black and White, and I wish he never got named as art director for Sword and Shield. James Turner deserves an equal share of the same hate that Masuda is getting.

Sure the art direction for the new mons in gen 8 is more focused on simple geometry with patterned details which isn't to my personal taste; but on the big list of SwSh red flags, that's hardly a major one. I'm far, FAR more worried about the fact that the games look like amateur unity projects with constantly stuttering framerates, only 10 routes, and more gen 7 style cutscene-ridden-drawn-by-the-nose gameplay than any of the mons looking a bit weird.

And even then there are still a bunch of good designs this gen (though Eiscue might actually unironically be the worst pokemon in the series, won't sugarcoat that one)

nah turner's fine, the actual art design of galar is pretty great and a nice representation of pokengland if you've ever been there. Shame they didn't do Scotland/Ireland/Walesthe islands as post-game, but leaves them untouched for potential fangames which is nice (and might be a fun autistic world to escape into)
that little yellow kike ishihara is the big bad of pokemon anyway, with masuda being a darth vaderesque ex-idealist who fell to the dark side (after BW's reception broke his rittle yellow heart)

The problem is GameFreak. The best game they've made in the past seven years is Pocket Card Jockey. They clearly do not have the passion, desire, or manpower to make full 3D Pokemon games. They have been forced to continuously crank this shit out to push sales of Nintendo's new systems, which led to Gen6 through Gen8 feeling half-finished.

Imagine if Nintendo had the Earthbound team make a new Mother game nearly every single year for 20 years, prioritizing speed over quality. This is what you'd end up with. It's not sustainable for any franchise.
