Sonic Unleashed was one of the first games to do proper global illumination. If Sonic stands on grass, the light reflected from it onto him makes parts of him glow a subtle green. Rings reflect a little yellow light onto him, etc.
It was also the only game to properly use the Hedgehog Engine, which used techniques to light mile-long levels in fractions of the time other lighting systems would use. Sonic Unleashed is honestly one of the best looking games I've ever played full stop. The only thing letting it down nowadays is texture compression, and since the game is never going to get a rerelease we'll never see the game in its full glory.
Sonic Unleashed DID push the 360/PS3 to breaking point. Levels like Adabat run at about 15fps half the time, and that's not down to shitty programming.
