Heroes you're not actively playing use your current team for them (with levels scaled) or canon presets if you don't have a team for them yet. They get access to different shadow pokemon plus the ability to trade between them so each hero is viable but unique, the level of challenge can be adjusted, and you can always use whatever team you like(levels wouldn't scale when traded so you don't lose progress/gain unearned progress if you want to use your bro with another hero)

Daycare now allows breeding. Explore more new and returning areas, see what pokemon moved in including discovering new species to tease that the next regular main series games will take place in fully-restored Orre with a new league and the native pokemon finally showing themselves for the 1st time in recorded history save some old myths.
Basically keep the atmosphere of the 1st game, improvements of the 2nd, and keep pushing boundaries of the pokemon games.
