He's generally not done much in town, but ran around each route catching and fighting trainers. So his play time seems pretty average, he hasn't just made a line for each Gym and ignored everything.
The last route is route 10, the wild area is very small (maybe the size of the BOTW starting area at a push, I think it is smaller), he has out levelled nearly all opponents with nearly his whole team, no elite 4 but there is at least a few story battles before and after the Champion.
