Gens 1-4 are classic Pokemon. Deny it all you want, but even with the style changes in Gen 3 and 4, designs still felt very Pokemon-like. Gen 5 had some great designs as well, and really only faltered with a handful of designs. Gen 7 had some slightly lower lows than prior Gens, but the highs (for me, at least) more than make up for it. Until Gen 7, I wasn’t able to call any legendaries any designs I actually liked. I’ll hold complete judgement until I’ve spent more time with the Gen 8 designs (seen the official art, animations, card art, etc), but it reminds me of Gen 7 in that there’s some lowing lows but with some true winners in there too.
So yeah, I have to say Gen 6 if only because it has the fewest standout designs for me.
