I only played the first one. While I enjoyed it, there a tons of ways to improve it. The music never captured me, the movement was always weird (you can't move your camera, right?), you can't accept multiple side quests so you are forced to traverse through the same area multiple times in a row if you want to complete all of them, and some other things. But all in all it was a good game.

SMT type game where you collect data on enemies and add them to your team,evolve and de-volve them along certain lines to make them more powerful and add new skills that you can use in the overworld. Main game (including random side shit you do to advance time) is pretty long, post game includes lots more grinding and battling.
