GameFreak themselves said they had to remake all the models because the 3DS ones "aren't compatible" with Switch or whatever.

So we have a couple of things here

1. They actually are retarded and had to remake models themselves (Last models were outsourced to Creatures Inc. Why they didn't outsource again to have them properly port over the models is baffling.) And this is why we don't have all the Pokemon. Because they simply haven't actually remade all the models.

2. They're liars and the models are the same and they're doing this simply for marketing.

I honestly fine option 1 to be what actually happened. GF is stupid enough, after all. And I've noticed some overall less quality on the new models when compared to SM, Go, and Let's Go. Little things like not being as smooth or corners that weren't there before. They definitely seem like they were made to copy the old models as fast as possible.

But this is all mostly speculation on my part. Who knows?

The meshes (polygon shapes) are about the same. The materials and lighting effects are new. Likely the skeletons are the same as well.

For the most part the moves cut are pretty awful and most of the time are worthless filler. I can see the argument for why not just keep them in but I'm not bothered by the cut. Return is the only one I'm confused by. Pursuit stopped a lot of pokemon who were average from ever becoming useful and HP was really problematic in letting some pokemon have coverage they had no business having. Adding on to that the coding for the move was archaic as to not even have a Fairy version so it's no surprise it was removed.

There was some fan investigation that found that saying the ‘models aren’t compatible’ is actually misleading. Turns out the models are actually compatible and you can see screenshots of side-by-side comparisons. It’s more so that the textures and the lighting systems aren’t compatible and need to be redone for each Pokémon. A while back there was some picture of Pikachu from sword and shield next to sun and moon and the model was exactly the same however you could see the lighting on the 3DS was more of a cell shaded deal, while sword and shield had a more realistic fade off for the shadows. That’s probably why they didn’t outsource it, because not everything needed to be redone but just a part of each model needed to be redone. Still a bit of a task but if this game put another six months in development it probably could’ve been accomplished.

I should note that the textures are higher quality and noticeably different than those found on the 3DS, but the models and animations are identical for all pre-Gen VIII Pokemon.
